The typical soil and spills on upholstery responds much better to wet cleaning. If we are dealing with "natural" fibers such as cotton, linen, or wool they would normally want to shrink. The reason we can use this system is the fact that the fabric is held in place on the frame of the item or in the case of cushions, at least in shape by the filling. We use special cleaners and tools to limit the wetness. Well over 90% of upholstery will respond best to wet cleaning and it dries within a few hours.
Certain fabrics cannot be wet cleaned without unnecessary risk, usually of dye bleeding or texture change. For these we use a charged solvent system with vacuum extraction. This rinses through the fabric but tends to remove far less soil than a wet system. Our system uses petroleum based odorless mineral spirits with a mild detergent charge. While the industry term is "odorless", reality will tell you that there is a pronounced solvent odor. This will dissipate fairly quickly, but it will depend on good ventilation to completely evaporate.
